Higher Apprenticeship as an Accounting & Advisory Trainee

Alvin attended Barnhill between 2006 – 2013. He attained 12 A-C grades in his GCSEs and later went on to attain a Distinction* (ICT) and 2 B's (Accounting and Mathematics) in his A Levels.

Following his A Levels he decided to not go to university and instead to undertake an Apprenticeship with an Accounting firm in central London.

What are you doing now: I am currently an Accounting and Advisory trainee at an Accountancy firm in central London under the apprenticeship scheme. Alongside working full time, I am also studying the AAT (Association of Accounting Technician) qualification.

What does my job entail: As an Accounting and Advisory trainee, my job role mostly involves me preparing VAT returns, year-end accounts for Limited companies and Management accounts. However, I also post sales and purchase invoices on different Accounting software and answer client queries via email or phone.

Favourite subject whilst at school: Throughout school Mathematics was one of my favourite subjects, so I knew when I was older I wanted to have a career which involved a lot of numbers and calculations. Studying Accounting for A-Levels confirmed this and as I really enjoyed this subject it made me realise that a job in Accountancy was for me as nothing else really appealed to me.

Words of advice for fellow pupils at Barnhill: University is not for everybody, so do not feel like you can't succeed without going. There are many alternative routes you can take after leaving Barnhill such as Apprenticeships which is where you get paid, on the job training whilst studying for a qualification which the company usually pays for - you are also debt free! If you are not considering doing an apprenticeship after Sixth Form - you should weight up your options and reconsider doing a Higher Apprenticeship!
