Music plays a huge role in the life of a Barnhill Student. All students study music in year 7 and 8. Their studies feature music from around the world, and involve the students singing, playing keyboard, drums and guitar and learning about the many kinds of music available to them. The students also have the opportunity to widen their horizons with the fabulous technology resources in the music department.
Throughout their key stage 3 experience, students are encouraged to take part in the many extra-curricular clubs we run, the twice termly Showcase concerts and the end of year School Production.
After Key Stage 3, students can choose to study music at GCSE level. The music department is also keen to offer the best possible options to the students. From 2015, they will be offering a GCSE level qualification in music technology.
Beyond Key Stage 4, Barnhill students can take music A-level. Once again, the music department offers both A level and BTEC to best suit the students’ needs. Throughout their time at Barnhill, the music department focuses on skills. We equip our students with the skills to develop themselves musically. This includes strengthening their listening skills and their ability to work independently. Equally, we develop our students as effective learners, enabling them to continue their musical learning after they finish school, using self-reflection and target setting.
In collaboration with the rest of the Performing Arts department, Music puts on the School Production every year. This involves students from across the school in learning, rehearsing and presenting a musical. It is the last, biggest event in the school calendar each year and is a wonderful opportunity for every student. The Mayor attends and parents, staff, governors and students are proud to display the fruits of their work.
We are very proud that in the last two years, six of our students have gone on to study Music at University or a Specialist Music College. The potential for gaining employment in the music industry is vast. Potential job opportunities include: Music Producer, songwriter, performer, DJ, radio sound engineer, live sound engineer, studio engineer, music artist and many more.
